Land clearing in Baldwin County covers ground that changes every few miles you drive. EMCO Builders works the whole county from our base in Elberta, so this is home turf. Red clay and bluffs sit along the Eastern Shore at Daphne and Fairhope. Pine flatwoods run flat through the farm country at Foley and Robertsdale. Down at Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, it is loose sand over a high water table.
Across Baldwin County the compact track loader does the work, with the attachment changed to suit the ground. A whole lot taken down to build-ready dirt, stumps and all, is clearing a lot or acreage tract. Ground you want left with chips on it instead calls for mulching brush and underbrush in place. A fence line or a pasture out toward Silverhill just needs the rotary cutter. Every job starts with an on-site look, and the written estimate that follows is free.

Along the Eastern Shore at Daphne and Fairhope, the ground runs to red clay on bluffs above the bay. Clay holds water, swells and turns slick, and it will not compact when it is worked too wet. Inland at Robertsdale and Foley, the farm country lies flat in pine flatwoods. The Robertsdale soil series, named for the town, drains slowly and sits wet near the surface into spring. Much of Foley sits on flat ground with a water table close to the surface.
At Gulf Shores and Fort Morgan, the ground is loose sand with the water table a few feet down. Sand drains fast, but it shifts under a track and washes out at an edge. Near the coast at Elberta and Lillian, sandy loam does some of both. A cleared lot here is only finished once the dirt is shaped. That second half is grading the ground so water leaves it before the rain proves you wrong.
Baldwin County counted 253,507 people in the 2023 census estimate and 261,608 in 2024. That is about 8,000 more residents in a single year, and all of them need somewhere to live. Daphne is about 28,000 people and Fairhope about 23,000, with Foley close behind near 22,000. Spanish Fort runs about 10,000 and Gulf Shores about 16,000. Most of that housing lands on ground that was timber or farm field not long ago.
Clearing calls now come from every corner of the county, and the ground differs at each one. North county around Bay Minette and Stapleton still runs to timber tracts and pasture. The Eastern Shore fills in above the bay, and farm ground at Loxley and Summerdale turns to rooftops. Magnolia Springs, Bon Secour and Point Clear sit tight against the water, where lots run narrow and wet. Once the brush is off, the next call on the same tract is often for trenching and small pond cleanouts.
In unincorporated Baldwin County, the state rule is the one to start with. The ADEM Construction General Permit, ALR100000, calls for coverage when a site will disturb one acre or more. Towns set their own land-disturbance rules on top of that, so the address decides which ones apply. Wetland ground follows the bays and the rivers, and low lots near Bon Secour and Magnolia Springs can sit on it. Federal rules can reach that ground, and the detail sits in our guide to clearing near wetlands.
This coast gets about 67 inches of rain a year, and Mobile is the wettest metro in the lower 48. July alone averages more than 7 inches, most of it in hard afternoon downpours. Bare ground with no shape to it turns into gullies in one storm. Hurricane Ivan in 2004 and Hurricane Sally in 2020 both put timber on the ground here. Sally dropped a lot of Daphne pine, and tall pines with shallow roots in sand go first.
