Gravel driveway repair is part of the driveway work we do across Baldwin and Mobile County, and the calls sound alike. Potholes that come back in the same spots, ruts that hold water for days after a rain. Washboard in the wheel tracks, and dirt coming up through the stone. EMCO Builders works out of Elberta, and the same problems show up on drives from Foley and Robertsdale to Gulf Shores. Our work here is the drive you already have. We read the base first, reshape the surface, cut a crown back in, and spread fresh stone.
This page covers repair of the gravel drive you already have. Building a new gravel driveway or a full rebuild from the sub-grade has its own page. The base draws the line between the two: thin stone over solid ground is a repair. Ruts cut to dirt, with mud pumping up through the rock, mean the base failed and the drive gets rebuilt. Concrete is a different animal, so questions about a concrete driveway go to that page.

The first look is at the base, the packed layer under the loose rock. We scrape the top stone back in a few spots and see what is holding the drive up. Sound base under thin stone means a surface fix, while ground that pumps needs base rock added. On the softest spots, geotextile fabric goes between the dirt and the rock, so soft ground stops swallowing new stone. Reading the base first keeps you from paying for rock that sinks out of sight in one wet season.
Shaping comes next: we knock the humps down, pull material out of the low spots, and grade the surface true. The middle gets set higher than the edges, so the crown sheds rain to the sides. Fresh stone goes on last, spread with the bucket and packed in with the machine. Shoulders and ditches get opened too, so water has a way out. Water coming at the drive from the yard is grading and dirt work on the rest of the property.
Mobile is the wettest metro in the lower 48 states, at about 67 inches of rain a year. July alone averages more than 7 inches, and those summer downpours are what take a drive apart. Water that cannot get off the surface runs the length of the drive and carries the stone with it. Shape and drainage are the fix, and a crushed or silted culvert works against both. We flag that on the estimate, since it calls for replacing a crushed driveway culvert.
Soil decides how long a repair holds. Sandy loam near the coast drains fast, but it shifts and lets stone work down into it. Red clay inland holds water, swells, turns slick when wet, and will not compact if worked too wet. The Robertsdale soils drain slowly and stay saturated near the surface through late winter and spring. Much of Foley is flat pine flatwoods with the water table close to the top. Fall through spring is the friendly season for drive work, before the daily summer rain.
The base decides which job your drive needs. Stone worn thin over sound ground takes a top up: fresh rock spread and packed over what is there. Potholes, standing water and a drive gone flat call for a regrade and a fresh crown, then stone. Ruts down to dirt and mud in the tracks mean the base is gone. New stone on a failed base sinks out of sight, so that drive gets built back from the bottom. A farm or camp road that trucks have beaten down gets read the same way.
At full depth a drive takes about 2.5 tons of stone per 100 square feet. A top up over sound base takes less, which is why we read the ground before anyone orders rock. We look at the ground with you and put the numbers in writing. The estimate says whether the drive is a repair or a rebuild. Weighing gravel or concrete for a coastal driveway? Our guide lays out both.
From the first walkthrough to the final one, here’s exactly how your project runs.
We come out and look at the actual ground: the growth, the slope, the wet spots and the access. We listen to what you want done and give you a clear, written estimate. No pressure and no phone-quote guessing.
We lock in a date, plan equipment access and where debris goes, and account for drainage and any lines or wetlands to protect. You know the plan before anything starts moving.
Our crew runs our own track loader and its attachments, keeps the site clean and keeps you posted. Decades of experience means we read the ground and adjust instead of tearing it up.
We walk the finished property with you, load out or mulch whatever the plan called for, and leave the ground clean, graded, and ready for whatever you are building next.
