Gravel Parking Lots Built to Shed Rain

A gravel parking lot in Baldwin and Mobile County often wears out first at the entrance, where cars turn in. People step out of their cars into puddles, and the ruts and potholes spread after every hard rain. From our base in Elberta, we build new gravel lots and regrade the ones that have worn out. Every job starts with why the lot holds water, because fresh stone over a bad grade washes out again.

This work covers ground where many vehicles park and turn, like a business, church, shop or equipment yard. If you want a new gravel driveway or private road at home, that job has its own page. The same goes for fixing a gravel driveway at a house, where cars stick to two wheel tracks. A lot takes turning and parking across its whole width, so the full surface gets shaped to shed water.

What Rain and Traffic Do to Gulf Coast Lots

Mobile sees about 67 inches of rain in an average year, with more than 7 inches in July alone. On a gravel lot, that water settles in every low spot, and tires grind each puddle into a pothole. Cars turning in and backing out push loose stone aside, so ruts cut in along the busiest paths. When water off the road pools at the turn-in, the fix may include a culvert under the entrance.

The ground under the stone decides how fast a parking lot breaks down in Baldwin and Mobile County. Near Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, loose sand shifts under traffic and washes out in heavy rain. Red clay inland holds water and ruts, and it will not pack down when it is worked too wet. On flat ground around Foley and Robertsdale, rain has nowhere to go and the soil stays wet.

Building or Regrading a Gravel Parking Lot

First comes an on-site look for low spots, soft base, a missing slope and water running in off the road. Next we strip roots and soft ground and load them out, so the base will sit on firm dirt. The part that fixes the puddles is grading the ground so water leaves the lot. High spots come down and low ones fill in until the whole surface slopes toward the edges of the lot.

A compacted layer of crusher run or crushed stone goes down on the shaped ground as the base. Then the bucket spreads fresh crushed stone on top, and our track loader packs it in. That stone follows the slope we graded, so rain can run to the edges and off the lot. Your written estimate names the stone and the depth, and it spells out how material reaches and leaves the site.

Should You Regrade the Lot or Start Over?

Gravel parking lot repair works when the stone is worn thin but the base under it is still firm. A regrade reuses the base that is there, so the job is smaller than a rebuild. We regraded a rutted, potholed business lot with water standing at the road entrance, then covered it in fresh stone. When the base has turned to mud, new stone just sinks, so we rebuild the lot from the dirt up.

A new gravel parking lot beside a shop or church may mean clearing a wooded or overgrown lot first. From there it follows the same steps as a rebuild, up to the fresh stone on top. We build and fix gravel lots and the ground under them; paving and striping are a different trade. After an on-site look, your free written estimate says which job your lot needs and why.

What Working With EMCO Looks Like

From the first walkthrough to the final one, here’s exactly how your project runs.

1

On-Site Look & Free Estimate

We come out and look at the actual ground: the growth, the slope, the wet spots and the access. We listen to what you want done and give you a clear, written estimate. No pressure and no phone-quote guessing.

2

Schedule & Prep

We lock in a date, plan equipment access and where debris goes, and account for drainage and any lines or wetlands to protect. You know the plan before anything starts moving.

3

The Work

Our crew runs our own track loader and its attachments, keeps the site clean and keeps you posted. Decades of experience means we read the ground and adjust instead of tearing it up.

4

Final Walk & Cleanup

We walk the finished property with you, load out or mulch whatever the plan called for, and leave the ground clean, graded, and ready for whatever you are building next.

What does a gravel parking lot cost?
The lot's size, the base depth, the stone and the drainage work set the price. Published guides put crushed stone at $30 to $60 a ton, delivered. They put grading at $1 to $3 per square foot. You get a free written estimate after an on-site look, and our gravel driveway cost guide has more.
Can you fix the potholes and puddles without starting over?
Yes, if the base under the old stone is still solid. We grade the potholes and low spots out and reshape the lot so water runs off. Fresh crushed stone goes on top and gets packed in. Where mud pumps up through the stone, that part of the lot needs new base first.
How long does a regraded lot hold up?
Drainage and traffic decide it, so the answer changes from lot to lot. A lot that sheds water to its edges keeps its shape longer than a flat one. Heavy turning traffic at the entrance wears the stone thin faster. Fresh stone on worn spots early keeps small potholes from growing into big ones.
What stone goes on a gravel parking lot?
We build a compacted base of crusher run or crushed stone, then spread fresh crushed stone on top. The base carries the weight of parked and turning cars. The slope we graded underneath sends rain to the edges of the lot. Your written estimate names the stone and the depth for your lot.
Do I need a permit for a gravel parking lot?
That depends on the address and on how much ground the job disturbs. Rules inside town limits can differ from the county's rules outside them. Your written estimate lists what your town or county asks for at that address. You see that in writing before any ground gets moved.
