How much does a driveway culvert cost in Alabama?

Angi’s guide, updated July 2026, puts a professionally installed driveway culvert at $1,000 to $9,000. Its average is about $4,500, and that price usually includes resurfacing the part of the driveway over the pipe. HomeAdvisor puts culvert drainage for a driveway at $1,500 to $5,000. HomeGuide’s gravel driveway guide lists culverts or drains at $500 to $2,000.

These are published market ranges. Our price for driveway culvert installation comes from a free written estimate after an on-site look. In Alabama, the road your driveway meets also has a say. The state, the county or the city decides what pipe goes in and how its ends are built.

What do the published guides say a driveway culvert costs?

The guides price two different things: the whole job and the pipe alone. The table sets them side by side.

The pipe is the small part of the bill. Angi’s pipe prices of $700 and about $800 sit below the low end of its install range. The rest of a pro price is the work and the drive surface over the pipe.

Angi gives no price for concrete pipe. That matters here, because Mobile County allows only reinforced concrete pipe in its right-of-way. Angi says concrete pipe is durable under heavy traffic, but its weight takes more manpower to set. So Angi’s plastic and metal prices do not tell you what a Mobile County pipe costs.

HomeGuide’s figure is one line in its gravel driveway budget, priced by what the property needs. Angi’s covers a professional install, usually with the drive resurfaced over the pipe.

What moves the price of a driveway culvert?

Angi ties its range to the length and type of pipe and the driveway material. Driveway culvert pipe is usually aluminum, galvanized steel, plastic or concrete. Angi says galvanized steel is strong but prone to rusting, while aluminum and plastic will not rust. Plastic is light and easier to install, and Angi calls it better suited for low-traffic areas.

On a public road, the pipe size and its ends are set by the road authority. The ground over the pipe adds its own work. The pipe needs a firm bed on the ditch grade. Compacted backfill goes over it, or the drive above it sinks.

Then comes the drive surface. Angi’s pro price usually includes resurfacing the drive over the pipe. It may or may not include stone, rock or sod to line the ditch. For a gravel drive, our gravel driveway cost guide covers the base and the stone.

Then comes the permit. HomeAdvisor puts permits for a new driveway at $50 to $200 on average. It says to check with your city or county. A permit can also ask for drawings, as Mobile County’s does.

The Mobile area averages 66 inches of rain a year. That much water is why the pipe’s size and grade matter as much as its price. A pipe that is too small, or set off the ditch grade, backs water up at the entrance.

What does ALDOT require on a state highway?

On a state highway, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) sets the rules. A driveway turnout on state right-of-way is applied for on Permit Form BM-111. ALDOT calls the pipe under the driveway a side drain pipe.

The minimum side drain pipe is 15 inches, and ALDOT’s regions can require 18-inch pipe. Drainage pipes under drives need sloped end sections or sloped paved headwalls.

ALDOT’s manual is plain about money, too. The applicant pays every cost of the turnout. Later, the property owner pays to replace the pipe when it deteriorates or is damaged.

What does Mobile County require on a county road?

Mobile County Public Works sets the rules for a driveway off a county-maintained road. Only reinforced concrete pipe, or arch pipe, may go in the county right-of-way. It is typically Class III, with rubber gaskets at the joints.

Culverts run 24 or 32 feet long plus 4:1 sloped ends. The county makes the final call on the end treatment. The pipe goes in on proper slope. Its inverts must match the existing or corrected ditch grade, so the pipe follows the ditch.

The new drive must slope down and away from the pavement for at least eight feet. That slope is half an inch per foot. The application needs plan and profile drawings of the driveway, and the profile must show the pipe invert elevations.

Bare ground left unpaved gets mulched and seeded or covered in solid sod. No construction in the right-of-way may begin before the permit is approved.

What about Baldwin County roads and the City of Mobile?

In Baldwin County, driveway permits for county-maintained roads go through the county’s CitizenServe portal. A building permit requires a driveway connection permit, and driveways on state highways go to ALDOT.

The county’s building permit checklist asks about the culvert. It wants confirmation that one has been applied for or already exists. Confirmation that none is required, or that the road is not county maintained, also works.

A temporary construction driveway can be permitted once the permanent driveway permit is approved. It is permitted for 180 days. It must also meet the county’s and the Alabama Department of Environmental Management’s rules for a construction entrance.

Inside the City of Mobile, the city’s own rules apply. For a drive over a roadside ditch, the city requires at least 15-inch reinforced concrete pipe. Its joints get wrapped in filter fabric, and safety headwalls go on both ends.

The city inspects before fill goes over the pipe and again before concrete is placed. Skipping an inspection can add the cost of removing and replacing substandard work.

What does our crew do on a driveway culvert job?

We put in driveway culverts across Baldwin and Mobile County from our base in Elberta. Our crew digs the ditch crossing with the compact track loader and its bucket. We bed and set the pipe on the ditch grade, then backfill and compact over it.

Then we build the drive over the pipe, either a gravel driveway or a concrete driveway. Before work starts, you confirm the pipe and the permit with the road authority: ALDOT, the county or the city. The free written estimate comes after an on-site look. It spells out the pipe and how it reaches the site.

How do you get a real number for your driveway culvert?

Start with the road your driveway meets. Find out whether it is a state highway, a county road or a City of Mobile street. Then ask that office what pipe it requires and what its permit needs.

Next, compare quotes on the same pipe and the same ends. Angi says a pro price may or may not include stone, rock or sod to line the ditch. Ask each quote whether it covers the ditch lining and the drive surface over the pipe.

Before anyone digs, Angi says to have your utility company locate the underground lines. For a free written estimate on a driveway culvert, call (251) 747-7839.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a driveway culvert cost?
Angi's guide, updated July 2026, puts a professionally installed driveway culvert at $1,000 to $9,000. Its average is about $4,500, and that price usually includes resurfacing the drive over the pipe. HomeAdvisor puts culvert drainage for a driveway at $1,500 to $5,000. What size culvert pipe does a driveway need in Alabama?
The road authority sets it. On a state highway, ALDOT's minimum driveway pipe is 15 inches, and its regions can require 18-inch pipe. Inside the City of Mobile, a drive over a roadside ditch needs at least 15-inch reinforced concrete pipe. Confirm the size with ALDOT, the county or the city before work starts.
What pipe does Mobile County allow under a driveway?
Only reinforced concrete pipe, or arch pipe, may go in a Mobile County right-of-way. It is typically Class III, with rubber gaskets at the joints. Culverts run 24 or 32 feet long plus 4:1 sloped ends. No construction in the right-of-way may begin before Mobile County Public Works approves the permit.
Who pays for the culvert under my driveway?
Usually the property owner. On a state highway, ALDOT's manual says the applicant pays every cost of the turnout. When that pipe later deteriorates or is damaged, the property owner pays to replace it. Angi says that in most cases, maintaining and repairing a driveway culvert falls to the homeowner.
Do I need a driveway permit in Baldwin County?
Baldwin County checks every new driveway connection for its effect on the road's safety, maintenance and drainage. A building permit there requires a driveway connection permit. Permits for county-maintained roads go through the county's CitizenServe portal. Driveways on a state highway go to ALDOT instead.
